Defining wellbeing — how I learned what it really means

“How’s your wellbeing?” asked my coach.

“I’m fine” I replied.

“No really. How is your wellbeing?” She asked again.

“I’m not depressed if that’s what you mean? ”

She paused. That is not what she meant.

Once upon a time I thought wellbeing was something you could buy, find in a fitness class, or spiralize then toss in coconut oil.

Then one day I got pregnant and my physical health vanished. I was so sick. Every day was a battle.

Next came early motherhood and that was a shock. I’d expected the baby but I was discovering there was so much more that came with it.

Then I went back to work and the struggle continued. My baby was thriving and my partner seemed happy enough. But for me there was no balance and I never got any sleep.

I told everyone I was ok and I believed me too.

At some point that came to a halt. I started telling people I was lost and had no sense of self. I wondered if this was just what motherhood was?

I continued to work with my professional coach and I also chose to call on the help of therapist to deal with childhood trauma. I’m proud I did that.

Since then I’ve learned that true wellbeing is simpler and more accessible than I realised.

The foundation of wellbeing is a combination of 5 things:

1. Sleep
2. Fuel (ie. food + drink)
3. Movement
4. Relaxation
5. Connection

The challenge is to regulate these 5 areas to support your wellbeing.

It sounds so simple but if you’ve lost your way then raising your self awareness and commitment to improve the core of your wellbeing will enable you, not only to get back on track, but to feel joy and unlock new potential.

If you want to work on your wellbeing I am looking for people to participate in coaching as part of my professional coaching accreditation with Grant Thornton LLP & BPP University.

Register your interest via this form and I will be in touch.
